The Social Action Committee’s mission is to highlight BHCBE as a caring community. We facilitate the congregation’s participation in acts of hesed (loving kindness) and tikkun olam (repair of the world). We also provide opportunities to educate ourselves about ways we can serve those in need in our local community as well as the community at large. Most importantly, we welcome new members who are passionate about issues of social justice.
Some the projects we have undertaken include:
- Sending volunteers to the Uptown Café to serve meals for the hungry
- Supporting our sister congregations in Ukraine and Belarus
- Hosting developmentally disabled adults from the community at our synagogue to celebrate Sukkot with our congregation
- Visiting and entertaining nursing home residents
- Making lunches to be donated to homeless shelters
- Hosting food drives for local shelters and collecting and donating school supplies to schools with children in need
- Honoring military veterans in our synagogue through our annual Veterans Day Shabbat
- Sending political advocacy letters to government representatives
- Organizing blood drives for local blood donation centers
