Conductor: Jonathan Lehrer
The BHCBE choirs are perfect for adult members of BHCBE of all ages who enjoy singing in a group. Ability to read music is welcome, but not required. Also, there’s no Hebrew requirement—all music is transliterated—and no formal audition process. If you’d like to join, call Cantor Roytman at 847-256-1213, ext.13 for a meeting to determine your voice part.
High Holiday Choir
The High Holiday Choir enhances the main sanctuary services on the High Holidays—S’lichot, Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah Days I and II , and Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur day.
Most of the High Holiday liturgy is done in traditional Ashkenazi nusach, but the choir also sings pieces by more modern composers, like Meir Finkelstein and Max Janowski.
The High Holiday Choir begins rehearsing each year in the summer—usually in July—and meets every Thursday evening at 8:00 and more often as the holidays approach.
The Chamber Choir rehearses weekly when the High Holiday Choir is not in session. Chamber Choir sings at special Kabbalat Shabbat services, selected Shabbat mornings—like Shabbat Shirah—and performs at events such as the Yom HaShoah ceremony, the annual Zemer Am Festival and some cantorial concerts. They have even combined with other choirs for a multi-ethnic concert at Alice Millar Chapel and to celebrate Thanksgiving
Chamber Choir often performs pieces in English, as well as music from other traditions, including gospel music, Ugandan Jewish liturgy, and Sephardic nusach.
Chamber choir rehearses most Thursday evenings from 8:00 – 9:30. You don’t have to commit to rehearsing for and singing at all events.
